What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

During your cleaning, our hygienist will:

  1. Remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.
  2. Polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave them smooth.
  3. Floss between your teeth.
  4. Give you personalized tips to care for your teeth and gums at home.

Your cleaning is usually paired with a dental exam, so your dentist can check your teeth and gums at the same visit.

Why Regular Cleanings Matter

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth every day. If it is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which you cannot remove with a toothbrush. Tartar can lead to cavities, red or bleeding gums and bad breath. Regular cleanings help you avoid these problems.

  • Removes buildup that brushing and flossing cannot reach
  • Helps prevent cavities and gum disease
  • Leaves your teeth feeling smooth and looking brighter
  • Helps keep your breath fresh
  • Gives us a chance to catch problems early

When a Regular Cleaning Is Not Enough

If your gums are inflamed or bleed easily, a regular cleaning may not be enough. In that case your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing, which is a deep cleaning below the gum line. Learn more about Scaling and Root Planing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most people should have a professional cleaning and exam about every six months. Your dentist may suggest more frequent visits if you have gum disease or often get cavities.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

Most patients find cleanings comfortable. You may feel light pressure, and your gums can be tender if they are inflamed. Tell your hygienist if you feel discomfort and they will adjust.

What is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth. A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, reaches below the gum line and is used to treat gum disease.

What if it has been a long time since my last visit?

You are welcome here. We will examine your teeth and gums, explain what we find in plain language and build a plan that fits you. If there is a lot of buildup, we may recommend spreading treatment over more than one visit.
