A dental implant is a small post that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. It acts like a tooth root. A crown is then attached to the implant so the new tooth looks and works like a natural one. Implants do not rely on the teeth beside the gap, which is different from a bridge.

Implants may be a good option if you have lost a tooth because of decay, infection or injury. Your dentist will examine your mouth and review your imaging to check whether an implant is suitable for you. Depending on your case, treatment may also include steps such as bone grafting.
